Cataract Surgery

Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. Most people in their 60s and 70s begin to at least show some sign of cataract.

Cataracts can affect your vision in many different ways, including blurriness, fogginess, glare, difficulty driving at night, trouble with reading, and dim vision. Cataracts are very common and occur as we age in every person. Cataracts are most frequently caused by normal changes in your eyes as you age, but other eye diseases or injury can lead to a cataract earlier in life. Patients with cataracts often find that updating their glasses prescription does not improve their vision sufficiently.

The only current, effective treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery. Dr. Bowen can carefully and gently remove your cataract and replace it with a new clear artificial lens to give you clearer, brighter vision.

Cataract surgery is Dr. Bowen’s specialty. So, if you are 40 or older and you have noticed changes in your vision such as increased blurriness, you can benefit greatly from a cataract surgery consultation with Dr. Bowen at his office in Gilbert. He performs the latest cataract surgery using the most advanced surgical technology and premium lens implants.

Dr. Bowen will discuss with you how your cataracts are affecting your vision and if your cataracts are ready for surgery. If you decide to pursue cataract surgery with Dr. Bowen, he will discuss with you your options for the artificial lens that will be implanted inside your eye. He is committed to safe and high-quality surgery and enjoys discussing surgery options with patients. Your artificial lens implants options include:

  1. Monofocal Lens – The standard option covered by insurance is called a monofocal lens. This lens still offers clear, colorful, and bright vision, but you will most likely need glasses for at least some activities, including reading and computer work.
  1. Multifocal Lens –Multifocal lens options continue to grow as new technology emerges each year. These lenses give a range of vision with the goal of minimizing the use of glasses. There are a growing number of options with this group of lenses including enhanced depth of focus lenses and trifocal lenses that give different options for clear vision at three general distances: far away, intermediate (computer distance), and reading vision (small print). These lenses are a great option for patients looking to decrease their dependence on glasses. This technology generally works best in patients with healthy eyes. Dr. Bowen will assess your eye health and talk to you about the appropriateness of this option for your situation. Examples of the latest multifocal lenses include the Panoptix, Odyssey, and Envy lenses.
  1. Toric Lens – Some patients have astigmatism that can be corrected with a toric lens to provide clearer vision without glasses. Dr. Bowen will assess your eye and determine your need for astigmatism correction with your cataract surgery.
  1. Light Adjustable Lens – The Light Adjustable Lens is one of the newest technologies available for excellent vision after cataract surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens is the only lens that can be adjusted after surgery to precisely meet your vision goals. This lens is a single vision lens that can be adjusted with light treatments after surgery. This is the best option for patients who have had LASIK/PRK/RK since the lens calculations used when you have had LASIK/PRK/RK in the past are not as accurate. This is also the best option for patients who prefer blended monovision (one eye distance and one eye intermediate or near) since the distance vision and closer intermediate/near vision can be dialed in after the surgery to your preference.

A cataract surgery consultation with Dr. Bowen will include a full explanation of your options. Together, we will come up with a plan that meets your goals.

There are two important steps to prepare you for cataract surgery: exam with Dr. Bowen and high quality measurements. The first visit will be a comprehensive dilated exam to evaluate your eye health and the cataract. This will be important to ensure the cataract is the cause of the issues with your vision. The second step is obtaining high quality measurements (often can be done at the initial visit, but sometimes there is a return visit for measurements if the surface of the eye needs to be optimized with an artificial tears protocol given by Dr. Bowen).

Choosing the best artificial lens implant is a choice you will have to live with for the rest of your life, so Dr. Bowen will take the time to answer questions and address any concerns to help guide you in choosing the lens that is best for you.

Dr. Bowen operates at Ocotillo Surgery Center (3920 S Rome St, Gilbert, AZ 85297) on Val Vista and Germann and Scottsdale Eye Surgery Center on Pima and Via de Ventura (8414 North 90th St. Scottsdale, AZ 85258). After-surgery visits will be at Saguaro Ophthalmology’s office in Gilbert with Dr. Bowen.

Most patients have significant improvement in their vision within 1 day to 1 week of cataract surgery. Most patients experience zero to minimal discomfort during and after their cataract surgery. Dr. Bowen will see you the next day in his office to discuss the post-operative instructions which generally involve eye drops for several weeks and mild activity restrictions for 1 week.
